Today started off a bit roughly, after a terrible nights sleep (Lucky me got to listen to the dramas of the guest in the room next door, pretty interesting stuff, just not at 2am). I fit in a couple of Skype sessions with mum and dad, trying to catch Ben but "he talked to me the other day" (He only said hello. typical haha). Today was a early start for driving as I had about 450km or about 6 and a half hours driving ahead of me. My first stop was Hvitserkur, a 15m high Basalt stack just of the coast. The road out there was gravel, and they even added a few pot holes for an even better drive, this made it quite a slow trip. Luckily I have my music and a killer voice to belt out a few tunes on the way. I will add though that the drive was totally worth it!! Im still trying to decide what it looks like, iv heard rhino or a dragon drinking. I personally was leaning towards rhino but I have too many ideas.
From here i took the ring road down to the entrance of the Western Fjords, or as it is more commonly known in the Heaton-Harris family, "The Hand". The aim for today was to get to Holmavik, which was achieved easily with about 50 "photo op" stops on the way there!! this road was RIDICULOUSLY SCENIC! I can imagine that what I drove is only the tip of the iceberg in this amazing part of the country but time was not on my side (Gravel/ Winding roads meant it would of been an extra 6 hours drive!!) Here is a couple of my favourite photos from the drive to Holmavik
As I arrived in Holmavik, I only had one thing on my to-do list and that was to visit the Museum of Icelandic Sorcery & Witchcraft. As I walked into the museum I was almost completely alone in a dead silent museum of magic and witchery. This creeped me out a bit, and I was waiting for someone to jump out and scare me (don't ask me why, but it possibly has something to do with having a father that would do this to me). At the end of the museum, which by the way was great, I came across my favourite historic item for the day. This is believed to be a Viking Stone Bowl that was used to make sacrifices to the Gods (Ragnar Lothbrok eat your heart out!!) They also showed how the scientists proved it by finding remnants of blood in the bowl.
From Holmavik I was on the home stretch to my next nights accomodation, so to speak. I was still 2 and a half hours away but had a great drive, stopping numerous times along the way for photos and snack time. The views again were spectacular, I don't think I could ever get sick of it. Each corner you turn you get brand new amazing views and it honestly takes my breath away!
As the weather started to turn, I arrived in Borganes (I can say it properly after much practice), my home for the next two nights. After a massive day of driving, I decided once the snow had cleared I would walk into town to grab some dinner. Even though this town is very small I am going to spend one of my mornings/ afternoons walking around as its quite a nice town! I splurged tonight and had some Skyr for dessert (An Icelandic sweet, just Google it ;) ) YUMYUMYUM, it was in the form of a cheesecake and it was FANTASTIC!!! I only asked for a small bit, which was a very safe idea, I could of done dad proud and polished off the whole cake it was that good!! After the walk home i thought I would finish the night off with a bit of a relax in the guesthouses hot tub. Once again with great views it was the best way to finish off a pretty decent sized day :)
Until tomorrow my favourite people, have a fantastic Friday :) xx
